how do you stop the screech sound when changing notes on bass guitar?

i have a 4 string bass and when i play it and change the strings and
notes i get this rubbing sound and i am getting really annoyed with it
because i am jamming with my mates and i keep stuffing it with that
sound, how do i stop it???
